My earliest stand-up comedy performances were in 1978 at Punchlines Comedy Club in the basement of the Chez Cuba
restaurant at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver.
One night, long before he became the Host of the Tonight Show, Jay Leno dropped by the club.
I was amazed at the amount of time he spent after the show, patiently answering our questions and giving us
advice gathered from his many years of performing stand-up comedy on the road.
Later when Punchlines Comedy Theatre moved to the historical Gastown district of Vancouver, I was selected to be
the focus of a TV special that was recorded by a crew from KCTS public television in Seattle, Washington.
Sad to say the tapes were damaged in transit between Seattle and Vancouver and the program never aired.
During those early years, I often enjoyed performing in the same shows as Ryan Stiles, who later went on to fame and
fortune doing improv on Whose Line Is It Anyway? and as "Lewis Kiniski" on ABC TV's The Drew Carey Show.
My biggest claim to fame back then was in Edmonton when I was chosen to open for Steve Landesburg the actor/comedian
who played "Deitrich" on the classic TV series Barney Miller.
Occasionally I wonder if my life today would be totally different if my TV special had ever been aired.
